Tree Care

Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns. Well-cared-for trees are attractive and can add considerable value to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a significant liability. Pruning or removing trees, especially large trees, can be dangerous work. Tree work should be done only by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees.

Why Hire an Arborist?

An arborist, by definition, is an individual trained in the art and science of planting, caring for, and maintaining individual trees. Arborists are knowledgeable about the needs of trees and are trained and equipped to provide proper care. Hiring an arborist is a decision that should not be taken lightly.

  •  What are ANSI standards and what do they mean?

  ANSI A300 (Part 1) - 2008 Pruning

A300 Pruning standards recognize four basic pruning methods for pruning:

  •  Crown cleaning is  selective pruning to remove one or more of the following parts: dead, diseased, and/or broken branches
  • Crown Thinning is selective pruning to reduce density of live branches.
  • Crown Raising is selective pruning to provide vertical clearance.
  • Crown Reduction: is selective pruning to decrease height and/or spread (consideration must be given to the ability of a species to tolerate reduction pruning).

Topping and Lion's Tailing are not acceptable pruning practices!  Over-thinning (rooster-tailing) of palms is not an acceptable pruning practice. Topping is the reduction of a tree's size using heading cuts that shorten limbs or branches back to a predetermined crown limit, or  Lion tailing, the removal of an excessive number of inner, lateral branches from parent branches can injure trees and not considered proper pruning practices.
